Bike News Roundup: Why isn’t cycling normal in [insert city here]?

It’s time for the Bike News Roundup! Here’s a look at some stuff floating around the web in recent weeks (months?) that caught our eye. This is also an open thread, so feel free to discuss whatever bikey stuff is on your mind in the comments below.

First up, this very British comedian’s take on cycling in London sure sounds familiar.

“hi Vis clothing” should have the word added “laws”…. have no effect. Well yeah, if no one wears the stuff, it won’t have any effect.

From personal experience, I get more room on the road when I wear it. And now that I am riding in the “bicycle lane” otherwise known as a shoulder on 50mph roads, I need to give drivers all the warnings I can because they have so little time to react to my presence.

I’ve never cycled in London, but I found cycling in Paris to be terrifying. I almost got hit by someone turning left. Horrific.

Bicycling isn’t normal in the US because American drivers are the spoiled idiot toddlers of world transportation. They’re barely taxed or regulated, their offenses even the point of taking lives are almost unpunished, and the storage and use of their vehicles receive huge public subsidies. I love my country–but boy, do I hate our transportation policies!
