Family of man killed in 2009 while riding in Ballard awarded $1.5 million

Shortly after a van owned by the Ambient Control Company struck and killed 39-year-old Kevin Black while he was riding his bicycle in Ballard in February 2009, dozens of friends, family and fellow bicycle riders gathered in Ballard for a solemn memorial ride, Black’s two daughters and his brother in the lead.

Now, two years after his death, his family has won a $1.5 million settlement.

“Kevin was an experienced cyclist and commuted daily on his bicycle,” Seattle attorney James S. Rogers, who represented the estate of Kevin Black, said in a news release. “It’s clear that the driver of the van did not see Kevin. But as more and more people choose to commute by bicycle, it is critical that drivers understand they share our roadways with cyclists. This was a preventable tragedy.”

According to the attorney’s press release, Black was riding in the southbound bicycle lane near 24th Ave NW and NW 64th St when the driver made an unexpected u-turn and struck him. Black was a molecular neurobiologist at UW.
