Seattle Crime: Police catch thief stripping parts from bike on Broadway

Seattle Crime reports that officers caught a man who was stripping parts off a locked bike in front of the post office at Broadway and Denny on Capitol Hill. Officers apparently watched the man for several minutes as he struggled to remove the bike’s handlebars around 2:40 a.m. April 22.

From Seattle Crime:

Officers watched the man wrestle with the bike for another minute, then pulled up behind the man and approached him.

According to Officer Auderer , “the suspect was so engrossed in his attempt to steal the bicycle that he did not notice there was a patrol car sitting that closely to him.”

Officers shouted at the man, who took off running on E Denny Way.

Officer Auderer and his partner, Officer Blasé, chased the man down Denny, until they were able to grab hold of him.

Officers found a screwdriver and wire cutters on the suspect, as well as a piece that appeared to be from the bike. Officers noted in the police report that the owner of the bike, a Giant Prodigy DX, had locked it up in a way that make it difficult to steal. They taped the bike part and a note to the frame telling the owner to contact the precinct about the incident.
