OMG, the Alaska Way Viaduct is coming down! Car traffic is entering the period of maximum gridlock. How will we get out of West Seattle to go downtown?

Ride our bikes!

This ride is a chance to try out bike commute routes in a friendly group, on a Saturday morning with more daylight and less traffic than on weekdays.

Meet in front of Starbucks in the West Seattle Junction on California SW at SW Alaska. We will ride typical bike routes into SODO, the Central Waterfront, Seattle Center, looping back through South Lake Union and downtown on the 7th Ave, Pine, 2nd Ave protected bike lanes, into Pioneer Square, and back to the start. Pace will be 12-14 mph on level roads without wind. Slower up hills or into headwinds, and faster downhill. We will stay together.

Experienced and friendly bike commuters from West Seattle Bike Connections will be along who can answer questions about routes, gear, and winter riding.

Please arrive by 9:15 for check-in, introductions and briefing, so we can start rolling at 9:30.

Any kind of bike in good working condition is OK, including e-bikes. Check your brakes, tires, and chain in advance. Helmet required. Bring what you need to fix a flat. Dress for the weather in layers. No special bike-specific clothing or shoes are necessary. A small backpack or pannier is nice, to allow shedding or adding a layer. There are restrooms near the start at the Junction, and we will stop for restrooms at Seattle Center.

Heavy rain, snow or ice cancels the ride. We will ride if it’s just showers or light steady rain. If weather is iffy, check back here for go/no-go notice 8 am day of ride: https://cascade.org/node/46115
