Friends:
On March 29, lifelong Lake City resident Jesse Gurnett was killed in the crosswalk at Lake City Way and NE 127th by a speeding driver, a tragedy that simply should never have occurred. Had the driver been obeying the posted speed limit, Jesse might have survived the collision–or the driver might have avoided hitting him altogether.
Here in Lake City, we live every day with the peril of having a state highway as our Main Street. Many improvements have been made on Lake City Way, but more are needed if we want people walking to have the chance they deserve to get from here to there without injury.
On Saturday, June 22, Jesse’s family and friends will join Lake City Greenways in celebrating Jesse’s life and honoring his memory with a gathering at the Lake City Mini Park and the intersection where Jesse lost his life. Our celebration will be followed by a meeting between community members and City officials to discuss actual, effective actions that can be taken to improve the intersection and reduce speed in the commercial core of Lake City.
