Thieves hit Fremont’s Cascade Bicycle Studio, again

Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 4.02.28 PMFor the second time this month, Fremont’s Cascade Bicycle Studio was broken into Tuesday. Unfortunately, this time they were hit hard.

In all, 32 bikes were stolen, including customer bikes. That’s quite an operation. Let’s hope law enforcement puts all their weight into catching them.

Here’s the announcement from CBS:

As some of you may have heard, we were broken into on early morning Tuesday, March 25th.  This was actually the second time we had been hit in the last month.  Unfortunately, we were hit very hard, and cleaned out of 32 bikes, which also included some customer bikes.   Thanks to those customers and friends who actually noticed the broken window, and called 911.

Unfortunately, the loss was very heavy this time.   We are nearly cleaned out of all bikes, so we have very little bike inventory to sell right now.

The list of lost bikes is long, but it includes the following bikes below.  If you see any of these bikes, please let us or the police know.

We’ve been getting a lot of great support and words of encouragement; thank you so much.   We’ve also been getting the question, “What can I do to help?”

We still have a full supply of Rapha clothing on hand, we just got POC clothing yesterday, we have lots of shoes and helmets, and if you were thinking of getting a Seven, Parlee, BMC, or Ibis this year, we’d love to work with you now!

Thank you for all the support and we will continue to move forward doing great work.

How terrible! Maybe check craigslist in Portland and a few other prime biking cities.

I wonder if they had any security cameras or an alarm? It seems it would take some time to haul out that many bikes and load them into a truck. Maybe 10 minutes if there were several people. Something for other bike shop owners to think about…

Unfortunately police don’t consider crime against bike shops or bike users “real” crime.

    Jayne and all,

While some police departments may not consider bike theft a “real” crime, SPD does, I think. In addition, 32 high-end bikes is probably over $100k in damage. Any police department will consider that a real crime.

I hope they catch the thieves and put their balls in a wheel truing stand and spin it.

Its cute that you think justice will prevail, but let’s wait and see how the cops treat this, versus how they might treat tens or hundreds of thousands of theft from, say, a car dealership.

Bikes are hard to trace and easy to sell. There’s no registration requirement where you have to supply a VIN as for a car. The police are not clairvoyant, so give them a break. Tell us how you would find these thieves, Jayne.

I haven’t done much business with CBS, but they once tracked down an obscure part for me no one else seemed able to get. I hope they can stay in business.

        nice guy alert!

In fairness, my Cap Hill home burglary last year caused about $30K in damage and the police did not remotely assign it a high priority despite extensive evidence identifying the suspect beyond any possible reasonable doubt.

It took months to do the fingerprints, leading her to have more than ample time to flee the area (so that she was only tracked down because they featured her on Washington’s Most Wanted.)

Nor was a single traceable item recovered by the police.

Jayne may not be kind in this thread, but in my experience, he is unfortunately accurate.

SPD doesn’t seem to treat theft of any kind as a priority. I had about $3000 stolen including $1500 stolen from a bank account (they got my checkbook) that were used in part to pay $1000 on someone’s utility account. Though the officer that took my report was nice, nobody was ever even assigned to look at the case even after I made multiple inquiries, and even though all they had to do was make a phone call to PSE, who had already told me they would release the account information to SPD if they had someone call.

Wake up, folks. The SPD is a huge joke. Unfortunately, on us.

Good news! CBS got all but 4 (so far) of the bikes back! Some have minor damage but they are all back home. Since they can’t be sold as new, Zac and the staff are having a big sale.

Thank you, SPD who solved the case. According to the CBS facebook page he can’t discuss details as the case is still ongoing but once again; thank you SPD!!
