This month, we will be discussing and working together to submit projects to the Your Voice Your Choice Grant:

Your Voice, Your Choice is a participatory budgeting process from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods that grants money to community-supported parks and street improvement projects. Learn more here: https://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/programs-and-services/your-voice-your-choice.The deadline for idea submissions is 18 March.

Join Licton-Haller Greenways to discuss ideas and work together to submit projects.

Here is the idea collection website – look at it to see what’s been submitted so far:

Your Voice Your Choice Idea Collection

The website is different this year. Instead of picking a council District you pick a category and then select a problem off a pick list, then enter you proposal. You don’t have to suggest a solution, but in the past it maybe, perhaps, seemed to help.

Although there will be only $185,000 awarded to each Council District, and we are not sure yet how voting will be conducted, it can be assumed that projects submitted will need to be reviewed by SDOT and if not funded through Your Voice Your Choice, at least SDOT will be made aware of the problem and possibly find another source of funding for worthy projects that don’t make the cut.

The categories and pick list problem descriptions are:

Accessibility: curb ramp missing; difficulty knowing when to cross; lack of smooth surfaces; obstruction or lack of space
Biking: lack of smooth surface in biking area; lack of lighting; lack of bicycle parking; lack of space for bicycles to wait

Maintenance: overgrown vegetation, sidewalk in poor condition, street in poor condition

Other:

Park Equipment:

Paths and Natural Areas: pathways, stairs or trails in poor condition
Pedestrian Crossing: drivers don’t stop; not enough time to cross the intersection; pedestrians not visible to drivers; signalized intersection/crosswalk is too far away
Vehicle: drivers don’t stop for other cars or pedestrians; lack of visibility at intersection

Walkway: sidewalks

Here are a couple of of tips that have been reported by people submitting ideas:

–Your narrative space is limited to about 500 characters, so you have to keep it short and succinct. If that’s not enough room, you can always add more details by adding comments to your own idea.
—If you click on the map your idea will be given a title that includes just the street address and the street/avenue where you clicked. If you would rather have the idea title include the cross street, you must type out the intersection name in full and then find the intersection on the pick list and click on it.

— By having others click on your idea and click on the “I agree” button (it has a heart symbol) or the “comment” button you can demonstrate widespread support.
