Dear Friends:

Lake City Greenways will meet on December 5th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 at the Lake City Branch Library meeting room.

We’ll be writing postcards to SDOT and WSDOT leadership, urging them to implement agreed-to safety changes on Lake City Way.

In late June 2019, friends and neighbors held a memorial walk for Jesse Gurnett, killed by a driver on Lake City Way in the crosswalk at NE 127th.  At our post-memorial Action Meeting, we brainstormed improvements that could help prevent such a tragedy from happening again, including a reduced speed limit in the commercial core of LCW and “leading pedestrian intervals”—walk signs that give pedestrians a head-start into the crosswalk before vehicles get the green. WSDOT and SDOT agreed to these changes but have been slow to implement them.

Let’s remind these agencies of their agreement and of the urgent need to make LCW safer for humans!

We’ll provide postcards, you only need to bring your enthusiasm for safety.

We will also talk about improvements needed elsewhere in Lake City and we welcome your ideas and pet peeves.

Janine and Monica
