With a light rail station due at Northgate in less than five years, this is a neighborhood undergoing rapid transformation. The neighborhood will only become more populated as the northern end of the LINK, yet there are significant challenges it faces in terms of access to housing, services, and a safe pedestrian infrastructure. We hope to use this walk as an opportunity to provoke a conversation about what a healthy, safe, affordable and inclusive community looks like in modern Seattle. The neighborhood of Licton Springs and Northgate are also historically and environmentally significant, including revitalized wetland ecosystems, houses built in the 19th century by the Denny family, and the nation’s oldest mall! CAUTION: The pedestrian infrastructure is incomplete. While we will be using sidewalks and signaled crosswalks for most of the walk, portions of our tour will include residential blocks without installed sidewalks. We hope to challenge you to think about what makes streets walkable or not and why some streets might not be easily walkable even with sidewalks.
