On June 30th, 2018, the Seattle City Council passed a resolution setting an aggressive timeline to build much of the Basic Bike Network by the end of 2019, focusing on connections to downtown from neighborhoods to the South, North and East. This resolution was the result of years of grassroots advocacy by people who bike – or want to – and advocacy groups Seattle Neighborhood Greenways and Cascade Bicycle Club.

Almost a year on, where are we at? On this tour we will share answers to that question, and explore the route of the soon-to-be complete Basic Bike Network.

Along the way, we will see some of Seattle finest protected bike lanes, look at and discuss different levels of protection, and see where we are still waiting for safe routes and discuss what is planned. We will also discuss what it means to have an all-ages and all-abilities network and how can we make that a reality. There will be time at the end for talking our role as advocates and how we can be most effective in making our streets safer for everyone. Our guides will be representatives from Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, Cascade Bicycle Club, and The Urbanist.

We will gather at Lake Union Park (in front of the new Center for Wooden Boats) at 9:50 AM, and begin promptly at 10 AM. Attendees are responsible for bringing their own bike in safe, working order. E-bikes and bike share bikes are welcome, just please be sure to leave enough time to locate and unlock a bike. We will be riding approximately 5 +/- miles, including some minor hills, and biking in protected bike lanes, painted bike lanes, and possibly some mixed traffic. Riding in groups is considerably safer than riding individually, and safety and staying together is our priority. This will be a no-drop ride and people of all ages and abilities are encouraged to attend. Safety will be a priority and we will Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.
