But for nearly a quarter of the people in our state – people wit h disabilities\, young people\, seniors and people who can’t afford cars o r gas\, this is our every day.

We’ll discuss community ownership of public space\, how we define communi ty safety\, and community alternatives to policing.

About Aaron Dixon\, Gues t Speaker:

\n

Aaron Dixon\, founding member and Captain of the Seattl e chapter of the Black Panther Party. As Captain\, Dixon helped launch the Free Breakfast for School Children Program\, which fed over 10\,000 child ren every day before school. Dixon was also instrumental in the opening of a free medical and legal clinic which later became the Carolyn Downs Clinic.

\n

Dixon is also the founder of the non-profit organization\, Central H ouse\, providing transitional housing for homeless young adults and a yout h leadership project. He is a former Green Party candidate for WA State Se nate\, and an organizer of the Center for Social Justice based out of the Seattle Central District. Read more here or see his interview with the History Makers.

About Peaches Thomas:

\n

Peaches Thomas i s a local Community Organizer with Du wamish Valley Safe Streets\, a member of the Seattle Neighborhood Gree nways coalition. She works to create opportunities for residents\, specifi cally youth\, to foster a culture of walking and rolling. Notable projects include SDOT’s pilot Home Zone project in South Park and the Georgetown to South Park Con nection. Peaches recently received the Unsung Hero Award\, pre sented by the South Park Neighborhood Association.

Peaches believe s in empowering communities through advocacy\, outreach\, and education. I n her experience working within Seattle’s South Park and Georgetown neighb orhoods\, residents feel safer when their shared spaces are equitable and accessible to all. She hopes to one day travel to Egypt\, Ghana\, and Fran ce.
