TOP THINGS TO KNOW & DO

1. On Saturday, you can join one of two rides to explore how historic racial redlining of Seattle neighborhoods shaped our communities (10am-1pm, 3-6pm).
2. Plans are afoot for major changes at the Northgate Mall and in Bellevue’s Wilburton neighborhood for more compact development patterns, connected to transit, walking, and biking.
3. Seattle’s One Center City Plan, which is supposed to improve transit and bike infrastructure in downtown, has been delayed.

• Downtown
  • The One Center City Plan, which includes protected bike lanes on 4th Avenue and transit improvements, is delayed. (STB).
  • Mike Lindblom videoed a ride along the future 7th Ave Protected Bikeway (Seattle Times).
  • Community design work for lidding I-5 in Downtown Seattle continues tonight (CHS Blog).
  • WSDOT has started metering traffic from Mercer Street onto I-5. Has it changed your experience in crossing Mercer? (KOMO, Seattle PI).
  • SDOT removed the hostile bike racks (Stranger).
  • Facebook now has 2,000 employees, in its building on Dexter Ave N and Westlake Ave N, which has a bike shop (Seattle Times).
• North Seattle
  • Neighbors speak up in favor of the 35th Ave NE safety project (Urbanist), while others continue to detract (KING5, .
  • Simon Properties, owner of the Northgate Mall, has big plans for transforming America’s first regional mall into a transit-oriented development with residential and office buildings and a central park (Urbanist, Curbed, Seattle Times, DJC).
  • SDOT is holding open houses about the Northgate Pedestrian Bridge this next week (Pinehurst).
• Eastside
  • Bellevue is considering an impressive zoning change to the Wilburton neighborhood that will create smaller blocks and tie future development to the Eastside Greenway, formerly known as the Eastside Rail Corridor (STB).
• Snohomish & North King County
  • Edmonds is taking public comment on designs for its new Edmonds Waterfront Connector bridge, and the designs reminiscent of sail boats are really quite wonderful (Edmonds Beacon).
  • A person biking on Perkins Way in Lake Forest Park was struck and injured by a driver, who fled the scene (Sweet Law Group).
• Pierce County & South King County
  • Burien is interested in connecting to King County’s regional trails network (B-Town Blog).
  • Pierce County expects to complete a new bridge across the White River for the Foothills Trail between Enumclaw and Buckley by 2021, thanks to funding from the state legislature this year (Courier-Herald).
• Kitsap County
  • Bainbridge may have a transportation levy on its fall ballot this year for funding for bike/ped improvements, and the Bainbridge Mobility Alliance has an online surveyto see what voters want in the package.
  • Construction of a new West Kensington Bridge, which replaces a culvert and will add a bike lane to the road, continues to be plagued by contractor delays (Kitsap Sun).
• State Legislature
  • New state law set for technology, use restrictions for e-bikes (Seattle Times, Urbanist).
  • Read how WA Bikes / Cascade did in advocating for bikes in the state legislature this year (WA Bikes)

BIKE HAPPY MONTH

Thank you to the 26 people who contributed to Bike Happy Month and the 10 people who pledged to volunteer.  We were able to raise $1,500 toward organizing the month of crowdsourced, DIY bike fun to close-out the 2018 summer, with a big street festival in Ballard to cap off the festivities. Using the dollars and hours raised as a match, the next step will be to apply for a city grant.
