National Ride of Silence is today, Seattle’s ride starts at Gas Works Park

Today is the National Ride of Silence. People who have lost loved ones in bike crashes and collisions (and anyone who wants to show solidarity) are invited to ride slowly and quietly together.

It’s about making a statement about the safety of people on bikes, but it’s also about respecting the memory of those who have died and comforting each other.

The Seattle ride meets at Gas Works Park at 6:30 p.m. and leaves at 7.

If you are planning to attend tonight’s Rainier Avenue action, you may be able to meet up with the Ride of Silence when it regroups at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The ride loops back to end at Gas Works.

Was at Gasworks around 6; nobody showed to lead, and only ~12 riders.

7 of us did a quiet lap around Lake Union, and declared the job done.

  2. That’s too bad. I respect that this international ride can be cathartic for some people and may also help raise awareness. Having done it a couple times myself, however, I’d like to transition into a MAKE SOME NOISE RIDE.

I found it odd to not speak when people asked what the ride was about and actually found the ride depressing. The last time I rode one I left mid-ride. I share the goal of increasing people’s awareness of safety on the road and I do think a friendly ride following all the rules of the road is a great way to do this.

Perhaps, however, a joyful LOUD ride might be more effective and, with the report of only 12 people showing up, I wonder if now is the time for this transition.

Would people be more likely to participate in a MAKE SOME NOISE RIDE?
