Obliteride is this weekend, still time to register

The second annual Obliteride is this weekend, and there is still time to register (though you have to raise your donations pretty fast).

A fundraiser for Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, this year’s Obliteride features more course options to reach people of all ages and ability levels.

The 2013 ride raised nearly $2 million, and planners are hoping for more this year.

From the Obliteride organizers:

SEATTLE, Aug. 5, 2014 – Obliteride gains momentum in its second year as cancer survivors, cyclists, researchers and others determined to end cancer ride to raise money for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In its inaugural year, Obliteride 2013 raised nearly $2 million for lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch. With the community’s help, organizers hope to collect even more in 2014.

Half of all men and one in three women will get cancer in their lifetime. “Together as a community we can fight back,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director. “We still have space, so grab some wheels and join us!”

Obliteride includes four routes ranging from 25 to 150 miles, so everyone from beginning riders to experienced cyclists can participate. Register to ride at Obliteride.org.

Obliteride is more than just a bike ride. It’s an epic weekend with fun parties and delicious food, including a Tom Douglas salmon dinner at the rider kickoff party at Gas Works Park on Seattle’s Lake Union.

I personally can’t afford the fundraising commitment, but I will donate $25 to somebody doing the ride.

  2. I did this ride last year and it was a fantastic ride and party. Doing it again this weekend. Join us!

If this year is anything like last year it will be an amazing event. However, I would like to see some further differentiation or merger of Obliteride and Ride Around the Sound. Very similar routes within one month of each other, fundraising for similar causes (lung cancer and cancer in general).

It would be nice for them to merge the two and split the proceeds? I think my friends, family and co-workers are suffering from major fundraising fatigue.
