UPDATE: The man killed has been identified as Trent Graham, a father and employee of Gregg’s Cycle in Alderwood, the Everett Herald reports:

Graham was a salesman at Gregg’s Cycles in Alderwood, and committed to getting around under his own power, said his mother, Monica Quigley of Everett.

“He didn’t like to drive. He was so proud of all the miles” he logged bicycling, she said.

Graham is survived by a 12-year-old son, who lives in Tacoma.

He was an accomplished artist and a big fan of Burning Man, an annual art gathering in the Nevada desert.

“He was just so fun,” his mother said. “He had so many friends. He just loved to have fun.”

UPDATE 10/19: KOMO posted fuzzy video of the collision. Still no word from police on why the driver swerved so far into oncoming traffic.

Original story:

A Tacoma man was killed today in Everett when the driver of a pickup truck swerved across several lanes of oncoming traffic and struck him while he biked. The 30-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

It is not yet known what caused the driver to swerve, but the incident is under investigation, police say. The collision occurred around 7:15 p.m.

Condolences to his friends and family.

More details from the Seattle Times:

The southbound driver crossed a center line and three lanes of traffic on the 10600 block of Evergreen Way before hitting the bicyclist, according to department spokesman Aaron Snell. He said the bicyclist, who officials believe was a 30-year-old Tacoma man, died at the scene.

What prompted the pickup to suddenly careen into opposing traffic is still under investigation, Snell said. The driver was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to Providence Regional Medical Center’s Colby Campus in Everett.

One question I had was, did the bicyclist ride all the way from Tacoma to Everett? And is that his regular commute?

Still incredibly sad, and clearly an unlucky death.

Trent Grahm was riding is bike home from his job at Gregs Alderwood Cycle when he was struck and killed by an out of control pick up truck. Trent was a able cyclist commuiting from his home in Everett to the Alderwood mall 5 days a week. It was not uncommon for him to ride 200+ miles a week. Trent recently moved to Everett from Tacoma. He will be dearly missed.

“Swerved across several lanes of oncoming traffic”?
Unless the driver had a verifiable stroke or somesuch, I hope they throw the book at the SOB.

My condolences. Sad story for all involved.

Hard to say what happened. My dad had an “ischemic episode” that took him miles out of his way while behind the wheel, finally coming to a relatively gentle halt by bumping into a streetlight pole in Bothell, his original destination being the U-District on a trip from Issaquah via 520. No memory whatsoever of the event. He was fortunate to have been followed the last couple of miles by an off-duty cop and so was treated pretty kindly.

Unfortunately just days after being cleared to drive again some 6 months later he drove head-on into a dump truck and was killed.

Best to reserve judgement for the nonce.

      1. wait what?

Wait, your dad was cleared, and he did the same thing except he hit a garbage truck?

      2. Jeremy

If only there were some alternative to the mandate that a significant fraction of the adult population sedent behind the wheel, irrespective of their health, sanity, or both.

      3. Doug Bostrom

Jeremy, your point is good. In our case my dad -used- to cycle down to the transit station until the quantity of speeding automobile traffic became lethally dangerous (from top to bottom of SR900, in Issaquah; if you live in that area you know the problem) .

At the time he was cleared to resume driving he was having trouble getting past a pulled hamstring; the doc told him to stop running for couple of weeks, avoid walking too much and drive to the bus for his trip into Seattle.

So yeah, he was boxed in by cars and ended up being killed in his own vehicle, not a mile from home.

What really sucks is that we had him on track to move into Seattle, to be closer to the UW which was his daily destination.

Basic point here is that lacking detailed background makes snap judgments on culpability fairly worthless.

  4. We were just contacted today at the Bicycle Alliance by one of Trent’s co-workers to ask if there was any way to inquire about the progress of the investigation. I’m new in the area myself and don’t know how long a typical police investigation of a crash like this should take.

Are you planning a follow-up to see if any more is known?
