  1. I used to be up that way reasonably often when I worked in Canyon Park; I’ve run through that intersection but never biked there. It’s a difficult area and I wouldn’t run there again — it’s a curvy, narrow road with poor sight lines, and there’s no level shoulder, just a roadside ditch.

Really, the whole area north of Lake Washington, between I-5 and I-405, has similar road conditions to this; this road is one of the worst I’ve seen. Travel in this area generally requires great caution which is not always observed.

Unfortunately I witnessed this tragic accident. The news reports are very misleading; the truck did not strike the bicyclist, it was the other way around! The bicyclist was going at speeds that were too fast to be safe for the condition of the intersection, described above. He was wearing no helmet. He lost control and cycled right into the truck, into the oncoming lane, at very high speeds. The truck swerved to the right to avoid him, but there is a severe drop off there and he risked his own life just trying to get out of the way. Very tragic, everyone please cycle very mindfully and safely; it is not always the motor vehicle’s fault!!

Thanks Vanessa, I always worry about my kids loosing their dad when I read stories like this. Knowing that my riding habbits may have prevented such an unfortunate accident makes me feel a little bit better.
