Musician and Elysian Brewing son Nap Cantwell dies from injuries in May crash

The young man who was seriously injured when he collided with a van while biking down Pike at Boren late last month has died, Capitol Hill Seattle reports.

Nap Cantwell was the son of Dick Cantwell, owner of Elysian Brewing, and Chiyo Ishakawa, deputy curator for the Seattle Art Museum. He was 18.

Cantwell was a 2011 graduate of Garfield High School and worked at Elysian, according to his Facebook profile. He was also a musician and posted his works to this Bandcamp site.

Specifics of the collision are still unclear. According to police, Cantwell—who worked at Elysian on Capitol Hill—was biking west on Pike around 6:20 a.m. May 29 when he collided with a southbound van on Boren.

Here’s SPD’s account of the incident:

According to witnesses, the male cyclist was riding his 10-speed bicycle westbound on Pike Street. The cyclist ran into the side of a van that was travelling south on Boren Avenue. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet. SFD Medics transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) responded and began their investigation. The driver of the van was evaluated at the scene by officers for any sign of impairment, which is standard protocol. This remains an active and on-going investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family.

Your account says “down” and “west” while the excerpt from the SPD account says “eastbound” (and by implication uphill). Do we know which, because it’s going to have an effect in the coming troll war.

  2. Tarry

The SPD amended their initial report: the cyclist was, indeed, westbound/going downhill.

      I corrected it.

My thoughts are with his family. A terrible loss.
