Tonight: Ride with Bike Snob NYC + Citywide bike-to-school parents meet-up

Bike Snob is in town tonight promoting his newest tome, which has been described as a religious self-help book for bike commuters. The Enlightened Cyclist is the follow-up to Eben Weiss’s popular Bike Snob.

Better yet, you have a chance to bike with him from the Central District’s 20/20 Cycle (near Seattle Bike Blog HQ) to Elliott Bay Book Co. Meet at 20/20 at 5:30 p.m.

From Elliott Bay:

An engaging evening is in store near and here—starting at 5:30 p.m. at our neighbors, 20/20 Cycle at 2020 E. Union (www.2020cycle.com), when popular blogger and author Bike Snob NYC will meet cyclists for a ride, ultimately leading to a 7 p.m. gathering at Elliott Bay, where he will discuss his new book, The Enlightened Cyclist: Commuter Angst, Dangerous Drivers, and Other Obstacles on the Path to Two-Wheeled Transcendence (Chronicle).

The Enlightened Cyclist takes up where his bestselling first book, Bike Snob, left off—particularly with its focus on commuting, and the cyclist’s relationship/tactics with other cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. The Bike Snob NYC—a.k.a. Eben Weiss—is also the source of the popular blog, bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com. This should be fun.

Here’s the book’s promo video:

Citywide walk and bike to school meeting Thursday

This could be the start of something awesome. Parents of biking students at Bryant Elementary, arguably the city’s top biking elementary school, are holding a meeting about starting walking and biking programs at your school. Awesome. If you have elementary-aged kids, get involved!

From Walk Bike Schools:

Hey parents! Do you dream of full bike racks on the playground and lots of helmet clad kids riding around the school yard? Or sidewalks filled with happy kids and parents walking to school? Are you interested in starting a walk and bike to school program at your kid’s school but don’t know where to start?

Let’s get together and share ideas about walking and biking to school!

Mark your calendars for the city-wide walk and bike to school meeting:

7:00 – 8:30 PM, April 12th in the Bryant Elementary library (3311 NE 60th Street)

Meeting goals:

  • Share information about walking and biking programs in schools
  • Get information about how to start a program at your school
  • Meet other parents who share the same goals
  • Build a network for information sharing throughout Seattle (blog, twitter, Facebook and Google Groups)

  1. Awesome, Tom. Thanks for posting this. Just mentioning Bike Snob and Bike/Walk to School in the same post to me says something good about the diversity on Seattle Bike Blog.

I want to clarify that we’re targeting this at all grade levels. Our experience is mostly with elementary school (and some middle school this year). We realize programs will need to change as children grow older, so we’re hoping to find and share ways to encourage middleschoolers and highschoolers to ride to school (and sports and events!) more often.

Also it’s not just parents. If you consider yourself part of a school community (student, neighbor, volunteer, someone wanting to reduce the fleet of “drive-to-school” SUVs circling the block, etc. ;-), we’d love to have you on board.

For folks who can’t make the meeting, keep watching the blog (http://walkbikeschools.wordpress.com). We’ll post a follow up there. We’ll likely also have an information sharing listserv soon.

Finally, if you have photos of kids walking AND/OR biking to school, posters, etc, we encourage you to share them on the Walk.Bike.Schools flickr pool. (http://www.flickr.com/groups/1889657@N24/pool/). Images of kids in are great inspiration for parents and school children!

Hope to see you Thursday or hear from you virtually!
