Moving Beyond the Automobile: Biking from Streetfilms on Vimeo.
StreetFilms’ Moving Beyond the Automobile series is going to be great. Lots of good videos still to come (congestion pricing, highway removal and traffic calming? When are these coming to IMAX?)
- Sightline looks at a pattern of area traffic projections falling short.
- Colorado driver Bryce Barker is in court facing charges for destroying a cyclist’s pricey bicycle with a baseball bat after a road rage incident.
- Removing roads and traffic lights can improve traffic, says a new study in the Scientific American. Say! I know of a road in Seattle we could remove right now (before an earthquake does it for us). If you are a viaduct removal skeptic, this story is a must-read.
- Get hit by a car, get a traffic ticket while you’re in the hospital. Seems fair, right? Here’s an incredibly reasonable video diving into the problem of blaming a pedestrian for dangerous streets:
Interfering with Traffic from Jay Mallin on Vimeo.
- Why do some people who drive despise people on bikes so much? And how do we change that?
- Help Kickstart production of the third installment of Elly Blue’s excellent woman-focused bike zine, Taking the Lane. I particularly like this $20 sponsorship option: “A one year Taking the Lane subscription starting with #3…plus tell me what you’re into and I’ll send you a selection of other people’s zines that I think you’ll like.” I bet Elly has really good taste in zines.
- Our newest ally in the 520 bridge battle: spiders.
- Where does your trash go? MIT researchers tracked Seattle’s trash with GPS devices, and some of it goes quite far.
- Even the questionable concept of valuing human life monetarily supports complete streets.
- Everyone should have a shot at cycling.
- A bike light PSA for all you poorly-lit cycling Trekkies out there:
Tell Us About Your Bike Lights! from BICYCLE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE on Vimeo.
- SDOT puts the final touches on the Chief Sealth Trail extension.
- New York’s bike lanes are saving lives.
- So, how are Portland’s buffered bike lanes doing? Need a couple touches here and there, but pretty good.
- Ever bike in South Lake Union? Take this survey.
- This sure beats hours on a StairMaster. Seems there are quite a few people in Seattle trying to walk up every public staircase in the city (and there are A LOT).

Excellent collection of stories Tom! I sponsored Elly Blue’s zine so that my girlfriend can get some new reading material and I particularly enjoyed the bike lights video. Keep up the good work!
