2nd Ave Bike Blitz! @ Westlake Park

On Wednesday, August 28, we’re blitzing the 2nd Ave businesses of Paper Hammer, Belfry Oddities, and Shawn O’Donnell’s to show them that bikes mean business. We’ll purchase some stuff and give the cashier “I arrived by bike” business cards, PeopleForBikes’s “Protected Bike Lanes Mean Business” Report, a Bicycle Benefits application, and a bike rack application. At the end of our ride, you’ll learn how you can volunteer to be a 2nd Avenue Ambassador on the opening day of the protected bike lane. RSVP >> http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/5719/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=71843

We’re also looking for people to serve as “Ambassadors” for the 2nd Avenue Protected Bike Lane when it opens up on early September. If you want to be an ambassador, email Brock at [email protected]. We’ll have more details and trainings after both the Bike Blitz and Tweed Ride. Plus, if you volunteer, you’ll get an awesome “Connect Seattle” t-shirt.

I must express my extreme displeasure regarding the protected bicycle lane on 2nd Ave.
As a commuter and Cascade Bicycle ride leader I have never ridden in the “bicycle lane of death”, the east side bicycle lane. In fact I regularly point out to other riders to avoid it. 2nd Ave. is a one way street. I am completely bewildered as to why you think bicycles should ride opposite of motor vehicle traffic and on the left hand side of the road. I will continue to ride on the west side as I currently due and now I get the additional burden of having motorists tell me to ride in the bicycle lane. Thank you for nothing.

I also share Marge’s insight about the placement of the lane. I’ve had motorists yell and honk when I rode on the right side which is required if you trip requires a right turn. Does Cascade Bike Club have any insights on how to address this?
The entitled motorists who do not stop for pedestrians, view the street as a highway and see bicycles as a nuisance are an issue in many places. While 2nd is not a happy place to ride, there are other places in this city that are as bad or worse.

Vancouver BC has an awesome network of two-way protected bike lanes in their downtown, including on streets with similar slopes to 2nd Avenue. Ridership is booming and crashes are down. Check out their great video (from 2010) about one Vancouver’s protected bike lanes > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nkg9szoJ2Tc#t=21
