Thursday is SAM’s Bike Night at the Olympic Sculpture Park

Screen Shot 2016-08-03 at 7.35.37 PMThe Seattle Art Museum is hosting a free Bike Night at the Olympic Sculpture Park Thursday (tonight!), featuring music, talks, workshops, food, a kids zone and more.

Want to learn about independent publishing? Learn to make your own zine with Microcosm Publishing’s Elly Blue and Joe Biel. Take a tour of the sculpture park with G&O Family Cyclery’s Davey Oil. Janet Fagan will teach you to make upcycled belts and bracelets using bicycle tubes, and the Bikery will help you fix your ride.

The parking garage at Broad and Western will be “filled with bicycle racks” and staffed by Bike Works. There will be beer, wine and food trucks.

Basically, you gotta be there. More details from SAM:

Free Bike Valet with Bike Works: 5:30 – 8:30 pm
Valet bike parking is like a coat check for bicycles, brought to you by Bike Works. The Olympic Sculpture Park’s garage will be closed to vehicles and filled with bicycle racks. Garage is located on Broad St., just west of the corner of Western Ave, directly under the PACCAR Pavilion.

SAM Performs: 6:30-8 pm
Boyfriends and Chastity Belt
Unbuckle your seat-belts and bike over to hear two of Seattle’s best feminist punk-rock bands. Boyfriends are a Seattle band who worship Freddie Mercury and host frequent nail painting parties. Chastity Belt is built on a foundation of post-post-punk energy, jagged rhythms, and instrumental moves that couldn’t be anyone else’s.

SAM Creates: 6-8 pm
UpCycled Belts with Janet Fagan
Add another DIY project to your toolkit and learn how to weave your own belt or cuff. Bring your own bike rim strips and inner tubes and contribute to a night of upcycling materials and sharing-culture.

SAM Creates: 6-8 pm
Bicycle Zine Machine with Elly Blue Publishing
Make your own pocket-sized booklet of bicycle memories in ten minutes or less! Joining us from Portland, Elly Blue Publishing focuses on feminist nonfiction about bicycling. Check out their quarterly zine, Taking the Lane.

Bike Repair with The Bikery: 6-8 pm
The Bikery is an all-volunteer run, non-profit community cycling resource located in the Central District. Stop by for free, on-the-spot repairs!

My Favorite Things Tour: 7 pm
Davey Oil
My Favorite Things tours bring some of the most opinionated, brilliant and fascinating artists, cultural producers and community figures into the park to discuss their favorite works of art. Join as G&O Family Cyclery co-founder Davey Oil leads you through the park. Davey Oil is the aka of David Giugliano, from Suburban Long Island, New York. He’s been a cartoonist, a projectionist, a designer for theater, a bike educator and a mechanic.

Food Trucks: 5:45-7:45 pm
Bread & Circuses, Off the Rez, Kiss My Grits, POP Up

Taste will also be serving wine, beer, cocktails and snacks.

Kids Corner in PACCAR Pavilion: 6-8 pm
Take a break from the sun and come play in the PACCAR Pavilion. Families can enjoy the Kids Corner and drop-in art making at the SAM Creates station. Spend time drawing at the kids-sized easels and capture the sculptures, plant life, and beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. Relax in a beanbag chair, read a new book, do a puzzle, or create your own masterpiece. Kids of all ages are welcome!

What a fantastic event!!!! Thank you for putting word out on it! (A whole garage for bike parking is awesome!!!)

Sculpture Park’s gravel walkway was intentionally designed to exclude bicycling. With all that room you’d think some space could’ve been dedicated for a bikeway. No doubt the money was more profitably spent on another parking garage.

I think this is a ridiculous comment. The Sculpture Park is designed to allow people to appreciate sculpture and you cannot do that safely (i.e., in a manner that minimizes the risk of colliding with pedestrians) while riding a bicycle.
