Notes from the Bike to Work Breakfast

We were not at Cascade Bicycle Club’s annual Bike to Work Breakfast this morning, but below are some notes attendees posted to social media (after the jump).

Were you there? Any highlights missing below? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Gov Inslee,… “we need more carbon in bikes and less in the atmosphere”
Thanks Chuck Ayers for your service and leadership! Over 900 attendees.

I wasn’t there but I believe they handed out plaques to some companies who were recently BizCycle certified (including mine… Gold level. Woot!)

As frustrating as our current infrastructure can be, it is incredibly inspiring to see that our leadership gets the importance of separated infrastructure.

  4. McGinn promises a cycling network downtown… but SDOT just released a revised Broad Street design with the originally planned bike lane removed, on a stretch of road designated for an in-street bike facility in the draft BMP.

It’s not enough to have the Governor make jokes about carbon bikes and the mayor promising a network of downtown cycle tracks. If that’s really a promise, *get it in writing*. Cyclists need to stop being satisfied by lip service, which is all we get.

A highlight for me was all the recognition of the importance of families and kids on bikes. The entire session opened with the lights turning down and a cute short DIY video of a biker kid expressing his enthusiasm for biking! Then several speakers mentioned the needs of kids and families, and the “Three Stories from the Road” video included a feature on Loyal Heights parent Shannon Koller and the Urban Cycling Club that I wrote about here on Seattle Bike Blog a while back.

The PI reported on Jay Inslee’s remarks including his pitch in favor of the Columbia River Crossing project. Sour faces all around.
