City repaving Fremont Ave N this week

A little advisory from SDOT for all you Fremont Ave N users (and I know there’s a whole lot of you):

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will undertake the following roadway work on Fremont Avenue N, from N 38th to N 41st streets, the week of August 22-26:

-A private contractor will be trimming trees for SDOT on Fremont Ave N, from N 38th to N 41st streets, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, August 22. Northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to use the southbound lane and a parking lane. Bicycles will merge with vehicular traffic through the construction zone and all sidewalks will remain open. To assist with traffic flow, a uniformed police officer (UPO) will be stationed at the intersection of N 39th St and Fremont Ave N.

-Following the tree trimming, SDOT crews will be grinding and repaving the travel lanes of Fremont Ave N from N 38th to N 41st streets. This work will occur from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, through Friday, August 26. Northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to use the parking lanes. Bicycles will merge with vehicular traffic and all sidewalks will remain open. There will be a UPO at the intersection of N 39th St & Fremont Ave N.

Also, bicycles are vehicles. It’s a small thing, but separating people biking from “vehicular traffic” in city releases continues this whole “othering” idea that happens on the road. “The bicycle lane will merge with the general purpose traffic lane” would be a little more accurate. </nitpicking>

I’ve always thought this stretch of Fremont Ave would be a great candidate for parking-separated bike lanes due to the absence of left/right turns. Just being a few feet farther from exhausts on the uphill side would make this difficult ride a more pleasant one.

Agreed! When I lived right near Paseo, I used to ride on the sidewalk under the beautiful tree canopy near BF Day. It was just a few blocks, but the air is soooo much better and the experience is night/day compared to the street full of diesel exhaust. A parking-separated lane here would be a great project, though. I wonder if they have room to widen the lanes on both sides…

    2. It would be a pretty short stretch. Coming north, it would have to start north of 39th, and end far enough south of 41st to give cyclists room to merge back in to make a left on 41st (a turn I have to make fairly often).
