Recent bike vs motor vehicle collisions

Here’s a short roundup of some bike collisions involving motor vehicles, as reported recently to BikeWise.org. Some of the collisions are up to a month old, but the reports are new:

  • July 10, 30th Ave NE and 125th NE. “I was riding southbound on 30th St. traveling at approx. 20 mph. The car passed me on the left and made a right turn in front of me into a parking lot. I slammed into the passenger side door, flew over the hood, and landed on the opposite side of the car head first. The driver was cited by the police officer for inattention … Injury description: closed head injury, chin laceration, wrist sprain, abrasions and bruises.”
  • July 23, 3430 E Marginal Way. “Bike was in southbound bike lane on E Marginal Way S. Articulated bus crossed into bike lane and struck cyclist. Bus was not approaching a right turn or bus stop, nor signaling a lane change. Driver indicated she had not seen bike and that “these buses are really big”.” The biker in this entry has also written about the wreck on the blog The Bloody Cyclist.
  • August 2, Burke-Gilman Trail and Densmore. “Cyclist eastbound on B/G trail at Densmore. Vehicle was southbound attempting to turn onto Northlake and pulled into bikeway striking cyclist. Cyclist had slowed almost to stop at time of impact, went down, scraping arm and thigh. Cyclist not wearing helmet, didn’t strike head. First aid rendered at location; unknown if police were notified … Motorist stopped, offered aid; nearby construction worker offered cleanup and bandage.”
  • August 4, Interlake and N 45th St. “Passing a car on the right when it made a right turn without signal … Injury description: Scrapes on left knee, left elbow, bruise on left hand, dents on right side of helmet.”

Be careful out there! And be sure to report those collisions and get police reports. Bike collisions are woefully under reported.

Does anyone think that one of the problems was passing an auto on the right?
